My time volunteering

I was part of the first group in Zvishavane which is an asbestos and platinum mining town. I worked in the local miners hospital but it was a facility that dealt with patients with a variety of health issues and served a large area. Despite this, it had only one ambulance and around 10 staff. We did our best to work with local people with HIV/AIDs and new parents and took the opportunity to raise awareness of living positively with HIV. We also talked to parents about ensuring a healthy start in life for their newborns.

We also did plenty of CADs including gender empowerment day and litter pick.

The impact of my placement

The impact was hard to measure but I believe we invigorated the hospital to an extent and showed how to use the space in the hospital more efficiently as we used an unused room as a ‘youth friendly corner’.

My unforgettable moments

I will never forget the social time spent with my counterpart and team leader just hanging around our local area and meeting locals.

The impact my placement has had on me

Massively – I got involved in lots of volunteering from youth programmes where I was a mentor to campaigning on international development with RESULTS UK. I also have worked for VSO and ICS for 1 year and 8 months.
