My time volunteering
During my time in volunteering in Makueni County I was part of a team working on a Livelihood program in which we were implementing the project EYEE (Empowering Youth for Entrepreneurship and Employability), a project aiming to enhance and grow the economic stability of the youth aged 15-30 years through sustainable income generation. We had three main outcomes throughout the program which were to enhance youth agency and ownership, increase access to employment and entrepreneurship opportunities amongst youths in Makueni and engage youths in Agribusiness. We were a team made up of Kenyan and UK volunteers, spread over the county in a variety of placement targeting a variety of members of the community.
The impact of my placement
During my time in Makueni I worked within a number of CTTIs ( County Technical Training Institues ) across the county working with the trainees to improve both life and business skills. Over the sessions we spent time discussing a variety of topics from self esteem to business start up ideas. Throughout my time on placement I had the opportunity to witness the confidence in the trainees not only grow but flourish across the 10 week placement with trainees becoming more open in expressing their own thoughts and opinions during life skills sessions and also their own future career ideas and paths in business sessions.
My unforgettable moments
My time in Makueni was made a whole lot better because of my amazing new found sisters and counterparts. We spent a great deal of time helping each other out with placement ideas as well as within the host home and local town Wote. One of the best would be chilling by the River on our first Sunday day off today eating the noodles that were way too chilli for my own liking. And also the amazing experience of visiting a National Park and Voi Elephant Sanctuary.
The impact my placement has had on me
After my time volunteering in Makueni was confidence has shot up and allowed me to step out of my comfort zone within my personal and working life. I have begun leading sessions at my local church on my life as a volunteer and the impact it has had on me at home. I hope to spend more time volunteering in the future and also encourage many more young people to take the trip of a life time and push themselves to be their best self.
